In Chicago, Fenger High School students were victimized by gang predators and one student, Derrion Albert, died from injuries sustained in the chaos. Apparently it is too much to ask of gang members to develop the skill set to behave in a civilized, intelligent manner. Instead, gang members kill innocent people that reject their violent methods of intimidation. Sadly, Derrion Albert died yesterday. He probably would have grown to be an intelligent adult that contributed to society in a valuable way, had he survived the neighborhood violence. Unlike his killers that will go on to victimize society and contribute nothing of value to the community in which they live. Derrion offered promise and hope to his family and friends. Fortunately, someone caught the violence and recorded it so we can all the see the spectacle and brutal reality of violent children that have no guidance and victimize those around them for shallow satisfaction while dwelling in a disturbed interpretation of the world around them.

In Chicago, after-school violence results in the death of honor roll student, Derrion Albert. Silvonus Shannon, Eugene Riley and Eric Carson are charged with first-degree murder in connection with his death.  The senseless brutal beating of Derrion was recorded on a cell phone. He was only 16-years-old when he died. The beating took place in a chaotic scene filled with young people lashing out at each other. Albert seemed to be targeted because he was unfortunate to be caught in the middle gang violence, though he was not part of either gang. When he was knocked to the ground, the gang predators viciously attacked him.

In Florida, Rodney Clem Cummings and Candy Cummings were arrested for charges related to the hit-and-run death of Samantha Hasting. Samantha was walking on her way to join friends when she was run over by Candy Cummings sometime between 6:30 and 7:00 pm Friday evening. Sadly, it was her friends that found her dead hours later.

Mrs. Cummings is charged with leaving the scene of an accident with a fatality and operating a motor vehicle without a valid driver’s license. News stories report that Mr. Cummings knew his wife did not have a valid driver’s license and was with her as a passenger at the time of the hit-and-run. Both are in custody.

In California, Danielle Woodruff lost her life because of a suspected drunk driver. She was on her way to a birthday party when Flores hit her head-on. The accident occurred on Highway 20, west of Plantz Road just before 6:00 p.m., January 14th. Both cars were badly damaged. Danielle was taken to Rideout Memorial Hospital where she died shortly after.

Though news stories report motor vehicle collisions involving drunk drivers as car “accidents”; there is nothing “accidental” about collisions involving a drunk driving. The distinction should be emphasized. It is common knowledge that when one drives while intoxicated, one runs the high risk of causing motor vehicle collisions and death. This is no accident. Motor vehicle collisions involving intoxicated or impaired drivers should be referred to as “non-accidental motor vehicle collision”.

In Chicago, tragically Alex Angula was killed by his foster family’s dogs this past Sunday. He was four years-old when he died. This tragic death was completely preventable. He had been placed in the home that had these three dogs by the Department of Children and Family Services in August 2007. Neighbors report that the dogs have a history of behaving aggressively towards people that walk by on a regular basis.

The risk for dog bites and canine homicides increases significantly when a home has more than one dog. Statistically, the incidence of dog bites is well documented, especially in environments with more than one dog. Why would a government agency place a child in this risky situation? And why would adults accepting foster children put the children in harms way with these dogs? Please visit our website for more information regarding dog bites and attacks. We represent children and their families nationwide.

In New Orleans, Danny Platt allegedly had told people he was either going to kill his son or the child’s mother if he had to pay child support. The question remains, with whom did he voice his homicidal ideation?  Did he tell his lawyer? Did he tell this to his family? Who knew he planned to do this? And are they liable for this child’s abuse and death?

Police report that the murder of this young boy was an extremely hideous murder. News stories report that someone knew he planned to do this. Who are the people that didn’t tell police of Danny Platt’s intent to murder a child or the child’s mother?  News stories report that Platt had not been involved with visitation until now, when he picked the child up recently. Now the child is dead.

Platt allegedly did not want to pay child support, so he allegedly killed his toddler son. Now taxpayers will be supporting him.

In May, Neveah Salinas Robledo was found dead in her Kings Road home. Investigators believe that allegedly Christina Robledo rolled over in bed on top of Neveah while she was under the influence of alcohol and drugs.  The Santa Clara County Coroner reported the baby’s death was due to “asphyxia due to overlay during bed-sharing”.

Police have issued a warrant for the arrest of Christina Robledo. She faces charges of voluntary manslaughter.

A Stanford student, John McKay committed suicide in August 2005 by way of exhaust inhalation at his mother’s home in Menlo Park. Just prior to his final act, he bought 90 capsules of Prozac on the internet. He denied suicide ideation in a questionnaire he filled out on-line. He was also never physically evaluated by a physician for this prescription he was requesting from an internet site. A physician-contractor by the name of Dr. Christian Hageseth wrote for the prescription from another state without personally evaluating or physically examining his new patient prior to writing the prescription. This was a breach of the standard of medical care while establishing a provider-patient relationship.

While the litigation process has not yet determined whether Dr. Hageseth was practicing medicine in California (without a CA medical license) or whether there was a causal relationship between Prozac and this young man’s death, one certainty exists – this young man did not receive the appropriate medical care from the last medical provider who entered into a provider-patient relationship with him.  Who, had he evaluated him, may have identified that 1) he needed hospitalization for depression or 2) Prozac was not the right drug for him.
