In Las Vegas, the number of Shaken Baby cases has suddenly increased from this time last year. Authorities are asking parents and caregivers to recognize their stress and put their babies down when they start to feel it so they don’t risk acting in anger by shaking the baby. Newspapers report that the latest victim of shaken baby syndrome is a two-month old. In this case the baby was shaken by a caregiver and not the parents.
Parents are reminded to speak to babysitters and caregivers about how to manage stress with the babies before the babies are left in their care. We are asking parents to please agree on a plan of management with the caregiver for when the baby is crying and inconsolable while the parents are not home. Agree on a plan for these situations just like you would plan who to call in an emergency. You may call 1-800-4ACHILD for help with suggestions. Please go to our library for additional information such as signs and symptoms of Shaken Baby Syndrome and Abusive Head Trauma and how to make a plan to not shake.
