Charles Lipson, Jr. has been jailed since June 2008 for suspicion of murdering his 5-month-old son, but the case was dismissed due to a lack of evidence. His baby died June 7, 2008. Lipson fathered the child with Lacey Barrett.
Of note, in June 2007, Mr. Lipson allegedly fractured the leg of his previous girlfriend’s child while the child was left alone in his care. Ashley Hagedorn, the child’s mother, was at work when Lipson was alone with the child. New stories report that Mr. Lipson allegedly said he intentionally and violently caused the child’s leg injury. During the investigation, allegedly he stated he stepped on the baby’s leg and continued to apply pressure until he heard the baby’s leg bone snap. He faces charges of battery resulting in serious bodily injury to a person less than 14-years of age and negligence of a dependent. Unfortunately, after he was arrested on a bench warrant for this crime, Lipson was released on $1,000.00 bond four days after his arrest. Essentially Mr. Lipson was free to commit more crimes against society.
This brings us to the death of his infant in 2008. On June 3, 2008, Mr. Lipson was with his baby, Railan Malakhi Barrett. Mr. Lipson called 911 for complaints that his baby was having a seizure. When EMS arrived the baby was not breathing. Railan was emergently transported to St. Mary’s Medical Center with injuries consistent with Shaken Baby Syndrome. On June 7, 2008, Railan died. The case fell apart when the Marion County Coroner ruled the infant died of natural causes because of malformation of the veins in the brain, despite previous expert opinions that the injuries were consistent with Shaken Baby Syndrome.
This writer postulates that both conditions may co-occur and the more immediate threat to the baby’s life could be the injuries consistent with Shaken Baby Syndrome. After all, malformed veins may be asymptomatic until they leak after traumatic shaking.
While the criminal proceedings may be altered in this case, a civil case would hold Mr. Lipson financially responsible for the damages in both cases.
