Six year-old Dylan Rosevear, of Livonia, Michigan died on Wednesday, August 20, 2008. He was with his family at Great Wolf Lodge, a Traverse City resort at the time of his life-threatening injury. Dylan was mortally injured when he fell off of a foam lily pad and hit his head in the swimming pool. He was walking across some foam, plastic covered floating lily pads. The investigation revealed that Dylan fell backward and hit his head on one of the floating pads. He immediately fell in the water after hitting his head. Dylan was wearing a life jacket. Dylan’s father and a lifeguard quickly rescued him from the water and began CPR. He was taken emergently to Munson Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. The Grand Travers County Sheriff’s department is investigating the incident.
Accidents are the number one cause of modern mortality in children. One key principal to reduce death and injury in children is to restructure the environment to improve safety. Death that is injury-related is approximately 37% of all causes of death. The major cause of injury is related to environmental factors, such as hazardous structures, drowning and pools of water, burns and overly heated water, cooking and open flames, motor vehicles and inappropriate use of restraints, and inappropriate storage of household poisons.
