In California, a Guatemalan man Jose Maurice Castenada was found guilty of first-degree murder and other felonies in connection with the beating death of Cesar Razo. The case was heard before the Superior Court. The penalty phase is next and jurors will decide if Castenada should be executed. He phases the death penalty or life in prison.
News stories report that Castenada beat his girlfriend and her children in their Escondido apartment. Witnesses say Castenada was trying to take a nap on the day of the fatal beating, when Cesar Razo began crying in a closed closet. Allegedly, two-year-old Cesar was made to sleep in a closed closet. Witnesses caught a glimpse of the beating and were told not to call 911 by Castenada.
According to news stories, the autopsy showed Cesar suffered two fatal blows that caused serious injury to his internal organs and a fracture to the back of his skull. The deceased child’s mother, Maria Razo pled guilty to voluntary manslaughter and child abuse in connection with this case in 2007. She also agreed to testify at the trial of Jose Castenada.
