In Sacramento County child homicides have increased according to the 2009 Child Death Review Team Report. News stories report that child homicides have increased by 300% since 2007. In 2007, there were three child deaths related to child abuse and neglect in the county. However, in 2008 the number of child homicides increased to twelve deaths related to child abuse and neglect in the county. This information was presented by the Child Abuse Prevention Center to the Sacramento County Board of Supervisors. The Sacramento City Council was asked to preserve funding for low-income family services during the economic crisis to prevent the number of child deaths from increasing further for the next few years to follow. The increase in child deaths is attributed to the economic downturn, increased unemployment and the financial strife that families are experiencing.
