In Indiana, Amanda Brooks and Terry Lay were both sentenced to jail in connection with the death of their three-year-old son, Kalab Lay. Kalab died on April 1, 2008. Ms. Brooks was sentenced earlier for a felony neglect charge and testified against her husband, Lay, in his trial. After Kalab arrived to the hospital with his parents, it was discovered he had a serious brain injury. Brooks and Lay were arrested, shortly afterwards Kalab died while his parents were in jail.

In California, Ben Juceam, a four-year-old special needs child, was allegedly abused in the classroom of a Placer County special education teacher. Scott and Lorena Juceam allege the child abuse incident occurred on May 13, 2009. By way of history, Ben is the twin brother of deceased infant Hannah Rose, a victim of Shaken Baby Syndrome that succumbed to her injuries in 2006. Hannah was shaken by her nanny, Veronica Salcedo. Two criminal trials were held in that case.
The Placer County Office of Education acknowledges that a two month long investigation involving the sheriff’s department and the district attorney’s office regarding the mistreatment of a student took place in May 2009. No charges were filed in the matter and the case is closed.

In Texas, the body of two-month old Jada De La Rosa was found outside a fire station at change of shift. Her father, Ramiro De La Rosa is held in the Bexar County Adult Detention Center in connection with his daughter’s death. He is charged with injury to a child/serious bodily harm. News stories report that someone rang the doorbell of the fire station during early morning hours. But when fire fighters looked outside the peep hole no one was there. The baby was found outside in the morning in an infant seat wrapped in a blanket. The baby’s autopsy is pending.

In Connecticut, news stories are reporting Doug Perlitz is facing multiple counts of federal charges related to child sexual abuse that stemmed from his alleged criminal actions between the years 2002 through 2008. News stories report allege that Perlitz may have transferred money from a charity fund to one of his personal accounts to carry out these activities. Perlitz’s alleged child sex crimes were carried out under the disguise of charity work in foreign countries. Roberto Antonio Alvarez testified in his trial he did not know about his deceased daughter, Mariah Alvarez’s, fatal injuries prior to her death. He is charged with failing to seek medical care for his daughter. Mariah’s mother, Melissa Lucio was convicted of capital murder in this case. Ms. Lucio received a death penalty sentence and is appealing. By way of history, Mr. Alvarez found his daughter pale and not breathing in the family home and attempted to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation until EMS arrived.

In Las Vegas, police are still asking for information on the whereabouts of Jocquise Coleman in connection with the death of a child, Lamaj Terry. Mr. Coleman is thought to be hiding in Los Angeles. Neighbors of the deceased child are stunned at what happened to him. Allegedly bruises were noticed on the child prior to his death, but Coleman explained them away and attributed the bruises to playing. Allegedly, witnesses at the time of the emergency noticed bruises on Lamaj’s head. At the time Lamaj was rushed to the hospital, Mr. Coleman left and said he would meet Brittany at the hospital. He never arrived to the hospital. Lamaj passed away at Sunrise Hospital.

In Florida, Chaddick Banks faces charges of aggravated child abuse in connection with suspected child abuse injuries and a skull fracture sustained by his 15-month-old stepchild. On Monday, emergency personnel arrived to their home for reports of a child that stopped breathing. The child was transported emergently to the hospital. Afterwards, doctors found the child had sustained a skull fracture. Reportedly, the child is in critical condition.

In Nebraska, Natasha Afraid of Bear was arrested in connection with felony child abuse charges. The Chadron Police Department is handling the investigation after receiving reports of child abuse from the Regency Trailer Court where the alleged abuse may have occurred. Ms. Afraid of Bear faces second-degree assault, felony child abuse and use of a deadly weapon charges to commit a felony. Two children ages 4 and 5 are now in the custody of Nebraska Health and Human Services. Ms. Afraid of Bear is currently held in the Dawes County Jail.

In North Dakota, Lori Voeller faces felony charges in connection with suspected physical abuse of children in her Rugby day care. In Michigan, a Bay City man has been sentenced to prison for the torture of his seven-year-old son. Bay County Circuit Judge William Caprathe sentenced the man to serve between 5 and 15 years in prison for first-degree child abuse. A social worker from the Department of Health and Human Services discovered the abuse that was taking place in 2007. The boy’s mother is reportedly deceased. Relatives have adopted the child.

In North Carolina, a vigil was held for Tiffany Wright and her baby Aalihah. Fifteen-year-old Tiffany was shot while waiting at a bus stop. She was pregnant. Neither child survived the gun assault that occurred one week ago. A vigil was held on Monday.
After Tiffany was shot and emergently transported to the hospital, doctors delivered Tiffany’s baby, Aalihah. Aalihah did not survive. No charges have been brought forward in Tiffany and Aalihah's death. Tiffany's adopted-brother is charged in connection with her alleged rape.

In Nevada, Metro Police are looking for Jocquise Coleman in connection with the death of a 16-month-old child, Lamaj Terry. Mr. Coleman was caring for Lamaj at an apartment on Spyglass Hill Drive. He is charged with two counts of child abuse with substantial bodily harm and child neglect with substantial bodily harm. Lamaj passed away at Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center after life-support was removed for brain death. Authorities report Lamaj’s injuries were consistent with physical abuse.
Mr. Coleman is thought to be in the Los Angeles area. Police are seeking information regarding his whereabouts. In Florida, Derrick McNeal is convicted of first-degree murder in connection with the death of two-year-old Demontaye Simmons. Reportedly, Mr. McNeal killed Demontaye Simmons when he tried to run-over his ex-girlfriend with a Dodge Ram pick-up truck at a family barbeque. In Texas, David Ramos faces life in prison in connection with the child abuse death of his eight-month-old daughter, Danielle James Ramos. The jury is deliberating. By way of history, Danielle was born prematurely in 2005. She tested positive for cocaine due to her mother’s alleged use of the drug. In Hennepin County, Rachel Reeves faces second-degree murder charges in connection with the alleged child abuse death of her 13-month-old daughter, Julia Leigh Rivera. On March 26, 2009, baby Julia was brought to the baby sitter’s house by her mother, Ms. Reeves. News stories report the baby sitter noticed Julia was not looking well. Emergency personnel were called to the home and she was transferred to Children’s Hospital in Minneapolis where she later passed away. The Hennepin County medical examiner determined that cause of death was blunt-force trauma. Ms. Reeves remains in Hennepin County Jail.

In New Mexico, Ashley Tafoya and Raymond Gabaldon are charged in connection with the child abuse injuries sustained by a two-week-old infant boy. According to news stories, each are charged two counts of first-degree child abuse. These charges may include criminal penetration. They are also charged with four counts of third degree felony child abuse. News stories report the baby boy suffered a fractured arm, a tongue laceration, multiple facial, extremity and pelvic contusions, lacerations with abrasions. Authorities report the baby’s injuries were consistent with torture and sexual molestation.

In Iowa, Tresa Rains is held in the Polk County Jail in connection with the 2007 death of her infant daughter, Zara Yamen. Ms. Rains is facing first-degree murder charges. On April 15, 2007, Zara’s father, Noah Yamen called emergency personnel when the baby was found to be unresponsive. The investigation and autopsy determined Zara died a sudden unexplained death. On September 17, 2009 the Ankeny Police Department received a tip about the true cause of Zara Yamen’s death. Police questioned Ms. Rains and she allegedly admitted to suffocating her daughter Zara.

In Nevada, Mario “Gene” Hill was arrested in connection with the 2007 death his two-year-old son, Nithaniel. Mr. Hill has been charged with second-degree murder, child abuse with substantial bodily harm. He is also charged with probations violation. In 2005, Nithaniel was a victim of child abuse and had been diagnosed with Shaken Baby Syndrome. Mr. Hill was charged in that case also. In Colorado, Benjamin Koller has been charged in connection with the child abuse injuries inflicted on his four-month-old infant son, Jack Sebastian Koller. The charges against Mr. Koller include child abuse resulting in serious bodily injury. The baby is in critical condition as his condition has deteriorated to the extent that his survival is in question. News stories report Jack has suffered a skull fracture, multiple contusions and bite marks. He was taken to Avista Adventist Hospital for treatment when providers observed he had red swollen eyes and bite marks on his arms and legs. Police were notified about the child’s injuries.

In Washington County, Daniel Keck was indicted for rape, kidnapping, gross sexual imposition and pandering obscenity involving a minor. Mr. Keck was allegedly videotaping minors in his Marietta home between 2002 and 2003. Mr. Keck owned another residence near Stockport located in Morgan County. New stories report that he allegedly used the cabin to take boys there to engage in illicit activities. An investigation was started after one of the minors reported his relationship with Keck to authorities. After he was arrested, more minors came forward to police.

In Florida, David Alan McBurnett is charged in connection with the murder of his girlfriend’s baby boy. Hernando County Sheriff’s Office is involved in the investigation. In Calvert County Renee Bowman pled guilty to first-degree child abuse of a surviving daughter. In addition, she faces murder charges in Montgomery County in connection with the deaths of her two deceased adopted daughters. Ms. Bowman admits to beating her 7-year-old daughter. The young girl was found wandering the neighborhood after she escaped from her bedroom window. By way of history, Ms. Bowman was found to have two deceased adopted-daughters in her freezer. This investigation took place in Montgomery County and trial is set for November 9, 2009.
