Burn Injuries & Holiday Safety

Winter holidays are a time of cooking, decorating, putting up lights, and lighting candles. When young children are around during these festivities, certain precautions must be taken to insure safety. Below are some tips concerning burn injuries and child safety this holiday season, courtesy of the Burn Center at Saint Barnabas Medical Center:

  • keep matches and lighters far from young children
  • place any small ornaments with breakable or removable parts out of reach of children
  • if you have a real tree, keep it in plenty of water
  • check electrical lighting for any broken bulbs or fraying strands
  • make sure that outdoor lights are fastened securely to trees, house walls or other firm supports so that wind cannot damage them
  • when leaving the house or going to bed, turn all decorative lights off to prevent potential fires
  • do not let children go near fireplaces and hot ovens
  • make sure the batteries in your smoke detectors are up-to-date.
Burn injuries are not to be taken lightly. If your child has suffered a burn from any incident and you have questions for experienced child injury lawyer Chris Keane, feel free to contact him online or at 1-888-592-KIDS for free answers and advice concerning your unique situation.
