How can adults prevent injuries to children in car accidents?

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that approximately 7,500 lives have been saved over the last twenty years due to the use of child restraints in cars. One of the prominent reasons for fatality in motor vehicle accidents continues to be the improper use or failure to use child restraints. The 4 to 7 year old age group is the most at risk for improper use of child restraint devices. If children between 4 and 7 years of age are properly placed in booster seats the risk for injury is decreased by 59% as compared to lap belts only in this age group. Very often this age group is not properly placed in child booster seats while vehicles are in motion. The National SAFE Kids campaign reports, that for all age groups, 86% of the time child restraints are applied improperly.

There are several types of car restraint systems that can be used. Depending on the maturity of your child, you may choose from the following seating systems: Infant-only rear-facing seats, convertible-combination seats, forward-facing seats, booster seats, seat belts and travel vests. Vehicles made after the year 2002 have a LATCH system to secure child seating systems. LATCH is an acronym for Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children. This is a system that can secure the safety seat without using the seat belts. However, depending on the make of the automobile and safety seat, your child safety seat may still require the use of your safety belts. Please follow the manufacturer’s instruction for correct installation of a safety seat.
