Back-over injuries are injuries sustained when a vehicle strikes or runs over a child in reverse motion. Many children are injured every year because of back-over accidents. These accidents occur more commonly in driveways and parking lots.
In 2003, 59 children under the age of 15 years of age were killed, as pedestrians or cyclists, by drunk drivers. Sixty-five percent of child pedestrians killed are male. Children under twelve years of age do not possess the developmental skills to correctly perceive distances, speeds, the origin of sound, and control impulsive behavior at the same time. Teen-agers, by contrast, do possess these developmental skills; however they continue to demonstrate a lack of appreciation for their environment and may engage in risky behavior while no adults are present to supervise their conduct. The degree of impulsiveness and risky behavior contributes to the accident-prone feature of some children.
