How many children are injured as pedestrians by cars?

Back-over injuries are injuries sustained when a vehicle strikes or runs over a child in reverse motion. Many children are injured every year because of back-over accidents. These accidents occur more commonly in driveways and parking lots.

In 2003, 59 children under the age of 15 years of age were killed, as pedestrians or cyclists, by drunk drivers. Sixty-five percent of child pedestrians killed are male. Most pedestrian fatalities occur between the hours of 4 pm and 8 pm. Approximately 80% of car vs. child pedestrian injuries occur between 12:00 pm to 12:00 am. A greater incidence of these injuries occurs in the spring as compared to the winter months. And almost 80% of child pedestrian fatalities occur at non-intersection locations. Of note, child pedestrian fatalities have decreased by approximately 43% over the last decade. Keep in mind that while many parents believe that small children, ages 5 to 6 years of age, should not cross streets alone, many of these children are allowed to walk to school alone. Children under twelve years of age do not possess the developmental skills to correctly perceive distances, speeds, the origin of sound, and control impulsive behavior at the same time. Teen-agers by contrast do possess these developmental skills; however they continue to demonstrate a lack of appreciation for their environment and may engage in risky behavior while no adults are present to supervise their conduct. The degree of impulsiveness and risky behavior contributes to the accident-prone feature of some children.
