A Stanford student, John McKay committed suicide in August 2005 by way of exhaust inhalation at his mother’s home in Menlo Park. Just prior to his final act, he bought 90 capsules of Prozac on the internet. He denied suicide ideation in a questionnaire he filled out on-line. He was also never physically evaluated by a physician for this prescription he was requesting from an internet site. A physician-contractor by the name of Dr. Christian Hageseth wrote for the prescription from another state without personally evaluating or physically examining his new patient prior to writing the prescription. This was a breach of the standard of medical care while establishing a provider-patient relationship.

While the litigation process has not yet determined whether Dr. Hageseth was practicing medicine in California (without a CA medical license) or whether there was a causal relationship between Prozac and this young man’s death, one certainty exists – this young man did not receive the appropriate medical care from the last medical provider who entered into a provider-patient relationship with him.  Who, had he evaluated him, may have identified that 1) he needed hospitalization for depression or 2) Prozac was not the right drug for him.
