In Clatsop County, Jose Gurierrez Sanchez was convicted of first-degree assault for serious child abuse injuries that he inflicted on his infant daughter. He will be sentenced to 90 months in prison without parole or early release. Mr. Sanchez abused his daughter and caused serious injuries to her face and mouth. The mother took the injured infant to the emergency department at Columbia Memorial Hospital. Physician’s describe the baby’s injuries to include her partially-torn tongue was ripped from the base of her mouth, all the way back to her tonsils. Physicians also observed that her lower jaw was visible from an open wound inside her mouth. The corners of the baby’s mouth were torn. The baby required a lengthy hospitalization and more than one surgery to repair the injuries.    

Male perpetrators of child abuse often inflict more serious injuries to children as compared to their female counterparts.
