Child Safety Seat (Child Car Seat) Tips for Installation & Use

Proper installation of child car seats can save lives, based on statistics showing car accidents as the leading cause of death in young children (specifically between the ages of 2 and 14).  Formally referred to as child safety seats, car seats have multiple straps and buckles that must be fastened properly and securely to ensure that a child is safe and is not ejected from the vehicle in the case of a collision.  Although many parents adhere to the law and use safety seats for their children, they often don't install the child car seats correctly.  According to recent researh, babies and kids who are not buckled properly in their safety seats are three times more likely to sustain injuries in car accidents than those whose belts are fastened securely.  Here are some tips to ensure that your child is safe, no matter what vehicle you drive:
  • Follow all laws concerning car seats and your child's weight.  Make sure your child is put in the right size safety seat that meets all the specifications and requirements for your child's age and weight.
  • Do not allow your kids to stand in thier car seats (or anywhere else in the vehicle), and do not put a baby or child in your lap for any reason while in the vehicle.
  • Read any pamphlet or instructions included in the packaging of your child safety seat.  Seats that fit regulations should have clear instructions on proper use.
  • Do not secure your child's seat in a hurry or while distracted.  Take your time and pay attention to make sure everything is secure and in place.
  • Consult with a law enforcement agency or other child vehicle safety organization to ensure that your child safety seat is installed and secured properly.
