Facts about unrestrained children being injured in car accidents
Unrestrained passengers are four times more likely to die during a car crash. And unrestrained passengers are far more likely to injure restrained passengers during a crash, by becoming projectile-like within the vehicle compartment. Statistically, the victims are most likely to be African-American males. Injuries such as spinal cord injury, whiplash, seat-belt syndrome, closed-head injury and post-traumatic stress syndrome are common. Studies support that unrestrained child passengers sustain more serious injury then restrained child passengers. Unrestrained child passengers tend to sustain injury to the head, neck, face, chest and extremities with complex injury patterns. Improperly restrained child passengers, especially the 4 – 9 year old group, tend to sustain abdominal and extremity injuries, including ruptured stomach, lacerated or ruptured spleen and ruptured or contusion of the bowels.
Use of restraints is highly encouraged and the proper use of restraints is emphasized. At no time, should a driver consider not restraining a child passenger to prevent seat-belt syndrome. Statistically, restrained child passengers are less injured or hospitalized for shorter periods of time and tend to not need long term follow up medical care. Accident data supports the use of restraint systems, accident victims are better off with seat belts than without seatbelts. Unrestrained passengers are the most likely victims to be thrown out of the vehicle. This generally results in the victim hitting his/her head on concrete or adjacent poles or trees, or being crushed by a moving vehicle. The mortality rate for being ejected from a vehicle is extremely high and is a common cause of death.
