The Orlando Sentinel is reporting that cases of fatal child abuse have doubled in the past year, increasing from 14 to 30 cases annually. A representative from the Child Abuse Death Review Team predicts there will be another increase next year. The cause of the increased fatal child abuse injuries is thought to be attributed to the increase in unemployment and financial stress that families are experiencing during the recession. Nationwide, states are reporting an increase in fatal child abuse cases, including abusive head trauma and shaken baby syndrome.
