In New Mexico, Michael Perea is charged in connection with the death of his stepson, Michael Montiel. Michael was only three-years-old when he died. News stories report the boy died after his stepfather, Mr. Perea, allegedly slammed his head to the floor in a fit of rage. Mr. Montiel now faces charges of child abuse resulting in death. Legal authorities found the indentation in the floor where the brutal crime occurred. Allegedly, Mr. Perea admitted to killing the child. New Mexico State Police are investigating the crime.

Sadly, this little boy lived with two adults that had a significant criminal histories and propensity for violent acts. His mother, Andrea Otero was recently convicted of child abuse, aggravated assault and DWI charges. His stepfather, Mr. Perea has a criminal history of arrests for battery, aggravated assault and shooting a firearm at a building. The deceased boy’s siblings have been removed to protective custody. Police have been to their home on past domestic violence calls. It is unclear why the children in this home were allowed to remain in the home with these two adults under these circumstances. And it is not known by this writer if there was a failure to report by mandated reporters that allowed these children to remain in their care. Over 50% of domestic violence cases that involve spousal abuse also include child abuse in the home. The two crimes are often correlated in domestic abuse situations.
