In South Carolina, State Senator Mike Fair (R-Greenville) will be introducing a state bill that calls for mandatory prison time in cases involving child-care providers that seriously harm children in their day cares. Senator Fair confirmed that his office is drafting a legislative proposal that imposes a mandatory prison sentence for defendant child care workers that inflict serious bodily harm to a child. He cited the Richland case where a day-care worker received no jail time from Judge Kenneth Goode after she caused Shaken Baby Syndrome in an infant under her care.

Of interest, the defendant day care provider is married to a police officer that works locally. It is unclear how much that may have allegedly influenced Judge Goode’s sentencing decision.
