In Las Vegas, authorities report an increase in child abuse cases compared to 2008. Authorities attribute the increase in child abuse to parental stress response to the poor economy and loss of jobs. News stories out of Las Vegas report record level unemployment and home foreclosures. This correlates with an increase in substantiated child cases and child deaths in the area. According to one spokesperson, Clark County Family Services reports an “alarming rate of severe abuse, child fatalities and severe injuries”. Already 2009 abuse cases and child death reports have surpassed the total number of abuse and death cases for this same time in 2008. Shaken baby deaths are increased.
There have been increased calls to social agencies from parents seeking assistance with child rearing and managing stress in the face of unemployment.
