Texas reports a 31% increase in child abuse and neglect deaths. Statistics from the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services show child abuse and neglect deaths increased to 280 during the fiscal year. Officials are analyzing their data to determine the cause of the statewide increase and presently do not attribute the trend to economic reasons. Harris and Houston County, both report the largest increase (90%) in child deaths. Harris County has the largest population of children, tragically child abuse deaths almost doubled since 2008.
