In New Mexico, Eric Begay was arrested by the FBI for charges stemming from alleged child abuse of his 9-month old daughter. The Ramah Navajo Police Department and Ramah Navaho Department of Criminal Investigation and the FBI are involved in the investigation. News stories report that on December 2, 2008 investigators received a complaint from Ramah Clinic where the child was initially seen by healthcare providers. The baby was then transferred to Gallup Indian Medical Center and then to the University of New Mexico Hospital. Healthcare providers had discovered that the child had been previously injured and not treated for injuries. The constellation of injuries includes old fractures and new injuries involving the legs, ribs, skull and ruptured left eye globe. The investigation is on-going at this time and the child is in the custody of the Navajo Social Services.
