Child Injury and Child Abuse Cases

In California, Man convicted in beating death of infant daughter | Child Abuse

Los Angeles County prosecutors reportedly say a man has been convicted of second-degree murder for the beating death of his 9-month-old daughter that was triggered by the baby's crying. Deputy District Attorney Heba Matta reportedly says the Norwalk jury deliberated about 10 minutes Wednesday before finding Jose Tulio Deras guilty in the 2011 killing of his daughter at the family's South Gate apartment. The 21-year-old Deras also was convicted of sexually assaulting his wife.
Matta says the child was reportedly punched numerous times in her chest and hit over the head with a shoe causing fractures to her skull. The prosecutor says Deras tied up and sexually assaulted his wife when she returned home after the baby had died.

Deras reportedly faces a maximum 50 years to life when he is sentenced March 21.
