Lauren Book, reportedly a survivor of childhood sexual abuse who earlier this year completed a 1,500 mile walk through Florida, unveiled the newest tool in her fight against child abuse today.
"Safer, Smarter Kids" is a curriculum reportedly designed to educate children about sexual abuse in a non-explicit way. The curriculum was created at the direction of the 2011 Florida legislature and uses six 30-minute courses.
Book stood with Sen. Bill Montford, Leon County Schools Superintendent Jackie Pons and Rep. Alan Williams at Apalachee Elementary School to showcase the new curriculum. The courses reportedly include video and and classroom materials, as well take-home components to get parents involved.
“This curriculum arms Florida’s children and their families with the tools and language they need to protect themselves from the traps predators set, without being in any way explicit or scary,” said Book. “I am proud that our Legislature and Governor have established Florida as a leader in protecting our children by implementing this curriculum.”
