Critical facts about school bus injuries

The design of a bus has remained basically the same for the last thirty years. Most are designed to transport children without seat belts, using compartmentalization as a safety mechanism. This feature has done nothing to improve mortality and morbidity for bus transportation over the past three decades. The risk of child death or injury is high in collisions at speeds greater than 35 miles an hour and even higher with frontal crashes compared to side impact at the same speed. Crash tests for buses have demonstrated that lap/shoulder belt systems yield the lowest head and neck injury rates, yet many buses today do not have this feature. Lap belts alone are not as safe as lap/shoulder belts on bus benches. Safety precautions are recommended to reduce your child’s risk for injury while riding on a bus or while waiting to board a bus. If your child’s bus does not have safety belts teach your child to not ride in the front row of seats. Teach your child to not stand in the aisle while the bus is in motion. Studies show that two occupants to a bench are safer than three occupants to a bench. Teach your child to remain seated while the bus is in motion and while other children are boarding the bus. According to the National Center for Statistics and Analysis, the use of lap/shoulder restraints reduces child fatality in general.

The National Coalition for School Bus Safety (NCSBS) reports that some sources demonstrate statistically that children are more likely to get injured or killed as pedestrians by their bus in comparison to being occupants on a bus. Schools and organizations should provide adult supervision to ensure children board the bus safely and do not wonder into unsafe areas around the bus immediately before the bus is due to depart. Schools and organizations should provide adult supervision on buses, other than bus drivers, so the drivers can focus on driving while the children are supervised by another adult. Teachers, bus drivers and other staff should know emergency procedures and safety requirements while safely transporting children.
