In 1974, the first Federal child protection legislation known as the Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act (CAPTA) was passed. The most recent addition to these laws is known as the Keeping Children and Families Safe Act of 2003. The Children’s Bureau, Administration for Children and Families, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is the Federal agency provides programs and services to children and families through the States, Tribes and community groups.
Since the early 1980s, Congress has remained committed to a variety of interventions that will help stop child abuse. April has been designated as National Child Abuse Prevention Month. The Office on Child Abuse and Neglect (OCAN) releases national statistics about child maltreatment during this month. The overall goal is to increase public awareness and education about child abuse prevention and intervention, as well as educating parents about prevention resources and parenting skills.
