In California, a toddler boy was hospitalized for Shaken Baby Syndrome and Onesimo Zapien was arrested for felony child abuse. The young boy had emergency surgery for serious injuries to his brain, head, torso and lower body. The investigation reveals that the child was flown to a Bay area hospital in critical condition. Reportedly he is in stable condition.
When Salinas officers and EMS arrived to the scene they found the child very lethargic and relatively non-responsive. Mr. Zapien had been babysitting the child for his girlfriend. There were no obvious outward signs of injury at the scene. However, medical providers discovered injuries consistent with shaken baby syndrome. Mr. Zapien was arrested for out-standing traffic warrants pending the investigation into the child’s injuries. He remains in custody.
