In Nebraska, Matthew Wylie was found guilty of child abuse in connection with the oral injuries sustained by 3-month-old victim, Zackary Daniel. Mr. Wylie’s allegedly testified that he was trying to use his finger to stop Zachary from crying. But authorities were able to prove to a jury that Mr. Wylie used a different method to cut Zackary’s tongue intentionally. A surgeon testified that he didn’t think a fingernail would cause the type of cut the baby had on his tongue that required surgical repair. Since Mr. Wylie committed the crime he has married the victim’s mother. The victim is placed with the maternal grandmother. Sentencing in this case is scheduled for February 3, 2010. The defendant, Mr. Wylie, faces up to 20 years in jail in each of the two charges.
