In North Dakota, Stevie Buckley, 18 year-old, is facing manslaughter charges for the death of her 6 month-old daughter. News stories report that Ms. Buckley arrived with her infant daughter to the emergency department at St. Alexius Hospital. The baby was dehydrated and malnourished and sadly, died the following day. The death investigation yielded bottles of hard liquor, evidence of marijuana abuse and associated paraphernalia at the home.
News stories did not provide details about the involvement of family members or friends that may have known this infant was being severely neglected. There is an increased risk for neglect when children are raising children unsupported by older adult family members such as grandparents, aunts and uncles, etc…
