In West Virginia, Emperatriz Meza Reyna has pleaded guilty to charges in connection with the near-fatal beating of her seven-year-old daughter. Ms. Reyna originally faced attempted murder charges for inflicting life-threatening injuries on her daughter. She entered into a plea bargain and pled guilty to inflicting serious physical injury on a child intentionally and child abuse. Both charges are second-degree and third-degree felonies respectively. Ms. Reyna will be sentenced on December 11, 2009.
In July, her daughter was found to have sustained severe non-accidental head injury. There was evidence of multiple blunt trauma wounds over the child’s body with a healing fracture noted as evidence of previous abuse. During the investigation, news stories report that Ms. Reyna admitted to hitting, biting and choking her child. By way of history, Ms. Reyna had prior contact with a child protective service agency due to substantiated claims of child abuse in the past.
